PDP’s Alfa wins Kogi East Senate seat
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday declared the
candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), retired Air Vice Marshall
Isaac Alfa, as winner of the Kogi East Senatorial re-run election held on
Saturday.
Alfa, a former Chief of Air Staff, polled 57,575 votes to defeat five other
candidates that contested in the rerun election.
The ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not participate in the
election following an appeal court judgment, which banned it from fielding a
candidate.
Returning Officer for the rerun, Prof. Lucky Ovwhasa, said Alfa was declared
winner after polling the highest number of votes.
He said the candidates of ACPN, KOWA, MPPP, UPP and the LP scored 1,793,
888, 498, 349 and 11,908 votes respectively in the rerun election.
The senatorial election was held in eight out of the nine local government areas
in Kogi East Senatorial district. These included Bassa, Dekina, Ankpa,
Olamaboro, Ofu, Idah, Igalamela/Odolu and Ibaji.
Meanwhile, the result for the Ofu state constituency re-run election is still being
awaited.
